Favourite actors, favourite roles: Cillian Murphy

This list was extremely difficult to make. I’ve tried to combine Cillian’s performances, roles (characters) and movies. That’s why some excellent performances, such as those in Peacock or Disco Pigs didn’t make it: I simply didn’t like these movies that much. (Now, Disco Pigs is a good movie, but the best thing about it is Cillian’s performance - probably one of the best in his career. However, the movie is not in my top 5, so… It didn’t make this list).

5. Sunshine - This movie had such a potential, but something went seriously wrong with pacing in the third act. I don’t hate the third act per se, but the way it was executed was sloppy. Too bad, it could have been one of the best Cillian movies. Still, I really like astrophysics, old-fashioned SF, and that cute Capa’s ponytail, so I just had to include this movie on the list. (Not to mention, Capa is one of my favourite Cillian characters, so Sunshine just had to appear on this list).

4. Intermission - One of my favourite Cillian’s movies. His role is not that big, because it’s more about the ensemble cast (and crazy Colin Farrell totally steals the show in the opening scene). But the movie itself was really good - and I mean really good - so it found its way on this list.

3. The Wind That Shakes the Barley - Enough said.

2. 28 Days Later - Arguably, one of the best films of the decade. There’s so much to like: the premise, the plot, the characters, THE KISS (oooh, the kiss), the fact it’s not a zombie movie but a story about human nature. In so many ways, this film is perfect. (Except one: I still prefer original ending).

1. Breakfast on Pluto - My love for this film is so huge; I don’t even know where to start. I don’t care if people call it “a mess”: I really like it. Also, Kitten. Oh, Kitten. Cillian’s best acting performance (so far! ;) )

Favourite actors, favourite roles: Jeff Bridges
There’s something about the guy you just have to like.
Note: I still haven’t seen “True Grit” (and people say it’s fantastic), so this list is a subject to change.
10. K-Pax (It’s not as much about him but Kevin Spacey… But there’s just something about this movie I really liked, even if it wasn’t perfect).
9. The Fabulous Baker Boys (One of those movies that are better than they appear to be. Sweet performances from everyone involved).
8. Fearless (His performance was amazing. The film was complex and disturbing, though.)
7. The Last Picture Show (This one is classic. A serious film that is not an easy watch. Jeff was so young!)
6. The Fisher King (This is a very good movie and so underrated. Getting used to Terry Gilliam’s style requires a bit adjusting for some people, but the story is so good that you can’t help but liking it).
5. Crazy Heart (The movie itself was mediocre… But Jeff’s performance was pretty strong. While I believe he won the Oscar because it was overdue, this was certainly a good performance).
4. American Heart (not many people know about this small movie, but it’s really good. And Bridges is amazing in it. Definitely worth a watch).
3. The Door in the Floor (Jeff Bridges’ performance in this movie is easily one of the best one in his career. Why he wasn’t nominated for this is a mystery).
2. Starman (My love for this movie is huge. There’s something so sweet and beautiful and, above all, nostalgic about this film. It’s one of those movies that shouldn’t work, but they do, and they work surprisingly well. Jeff’s performance as a confused alien is flawless).
1. The Big Lebowski (No need to explain this one, I guess. The Dude abides).

Favourite actors, favourite roles: Gary Oldman
This wasn’t an easy task. Gary Oldman is one of my favourite actors and I have a great respect for his work.
However, I also think that many of his movies suck a big time. There are so many great performances, but also quite a few bad movies. Also, it’s unclear whether we should talk about favourite performances, favourite characters or favourite movies here… So I tried to combine all of these elements.
The list:
10. Sid and Nancy (I didn’t care about the movie, but he was amazing as Sid Vicious… Trivia: People (who don’t realize he’s not an American) still praise his accent in this film. *facepalm* ).
9. JFK (a good film, but not my thing. He rocked as Lee Harvey Oswald).
8. The Contender (once again, not my type of a movie… But his performance was the best one, and he was snubbed for the Oscars… I think after this fiasco, he just stopped caring).
7. Romeo is Bleeding (a trashy movie in so many ways, but still quite enjoyable for its absurdity).
6. Leon (The Professional) (this is a Gary classic, and not just because of the (in)famous Stansfield screaming scenes).
5. Bram Stoker’s Dracula (so many things went wrong in this movie (casting Keanu Reeves is just one of them). Still, it’s the one that got me interested in Gary Oldman and definitely one of his most memorable roles).
4. State of Grace (the movie itself sucks a big time… But Jackie Flannery… JACKIE FLANNERY!!!).
3. Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead (arguably, it wasn’t as good as the play… but Gary and Tim Roth were both amazing in this adaptation of the intriguing “Hamlet-meets-Godot” story. Oh, and in case you’re still confused, Gary was Rosencranz. Probably.)
2. Meantime (a little known TV movie, but a great one. Directed by my favourite director, Mike Leigh… If you’re familiar with his work, you know the deal. Gary’s role is a small one (Tim Roth plays the lead), but he’s great… as usual).
1. Prick Up Your Ears (my favourite Gary movie. The film itself was good, the story was good, the acting was superb, Gary himself was fantastic… And it also has the most passionate kiss in movie history).
